Physician-Scholar to Give Lecture on Science, Politics and Ethics

Physician and scholar Leon R. Kass, one of the nation’s most thoughtful voices on bioethics and the difficult choices modern science presents to Americans, will speak Nov. 9 at the University of Richmond as part of the Jepson Leadership Forum.

Kass will discuss “The Intersection of Science, Politics and Ethics” at 7 p.m. in the Jepson Alumni Center. Tickets are free but required. To reserve tickets, call (804) 289-8980.

The immediate past chair of the President’s Council on Bioethics, Kass has grappled with many of the complex moral, scientific and social questions of our time. Some of the topics he will discuss include in vitro fertilization, stem cell research, cloning, genetic screening and genetic technology, organ transplantation, aging research, euthanasia and assisted suicide.

Kass is the Addie Clark Harding Professor at the University of Chicago and Hertog Fellow in Social Thought at the American Enterprise Institute.

A native of Chicago, Kass earned B.S. and M.D. degrees at the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard. He conducted research in molecular biology at the National Institutes of Health while serving n the U.S. Public Health Service. For the last 35 years, he has been engaged with ethical and philosophical issues raised by biomedical advance, and more recently, with broader moral and cultural issues.
