Scholars to Discuss Leadership Under Extraordinary Circumstances

"Leadership under Extraordinary Circumstances" will be the theme of a panel Oct. 15, 3:30-5 p.m., in Jepson Hall, room 118 at the University of Richmond.

Scholars A.E. Dick Howard, David Blight, J. Thomas Wren and Perry M. Smith will explore the topic through historical analysis and their own assessments and insights.

An expert on constitutional law, Howard is the White Burkett Miller Professor of Law and Public Affairs at the University of Virginia School of Law, where he has taught since 1964. Howard served for two years as a law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Hugo L. Black and was counselor to the governor of Virginia from 1982 to 1986.

Blight is the Class of 1954 Professor of American History at Yale University. His area of expertise is the Civil War, specifically Frederick Douglass' influence on it.

A scholar and attorney, Wren teaches history and theories of leadership at the Jepson School of Leadership Studies and is editor of the collection "The Leaders Companion."

Smith, an analyst for CBS Radio News, has written six books, including "Assignment Pentagon" and "Rules and Tools for Leaders." A retired major general who served for 30 years in the U.S. Air Force, he is also president of the Medal of Honor Foundation.

Joanne B. Ciulla, holder of the Coston Family Chair in Leadership and Ethics and
professor of leadership studies at Richmond, will serve as moderator.
