Modlin Center Presents Manhattan Transfer at Carpenter Center, November 15 at 7:30 P.M.
October 14, 2004
Vocal ensemble Manhattan Transfer will perform in Richmond on November 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts. Earning eight Grammy Awards across 20 albums, Manhattan Transfer has set new standards for vocal performance music through their four-part harmony spanning genres from jazz and R&B to doo-wop and rock 'n' roll.
For over 30 years, Manhattan Transfer has dabbled in gospel, pop and doo-wop before finally settling on their winning combination of the vocalese technique: a style of jazz singing where lyrics are written over music originally written for all-instrumental or improvisation. Their hit CD "Vocalese," released in 1985, was responsible for the group's first jump into the world of music videos, as well as 12 Grammy nominations, at the time distinguishing it as the second highest nomination receiver in history, second only to Michael Jackson's "Thriller." 2000's "The Spirit of St. Louis" chronicles their interpretations of the music of Louis Armstrong. "Swing," released in 1997, takes inspiration from the swing era of the 1930s, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Jazz Charts and remained in the top spot for nine weeks and on the chart for over a year.
Their most recent album, "Vibrate," takes many of the genres they played around with in their formative years, and puts a contemporary spin on them, mixing modern technology terms with age-old notions of romance.
