Barbara Ehrenreich to Speak at University of Richmond
October 7, 2002
Best-selling author and social commentator Barbara Ehrenreich will speak at the University of Richmond Thursday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Alice Haynes Room of Tyler Haynes Commons. Her lecture is free and open to the public.
Ehrenreich will talk about her research for "Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America," a first-person account of her experiences working minimum-wage jobs across the country as a waitress, a house cleaner, and a Wal-Mart clerk. Ehrenreich's goal with each job was to earn enough in one month to cover rent and basic bills the following month; in no case was she able to do so.
Ehrenreich also will talk about journalism as a form of social activism. Ehrenreich's earlier books include "Fear of Falling: The Inner Life of the Middle Class," and she has written for dozens of magazines, including Ms., Harper's and the New York Times Magazine.
Ehrenreich's appearance is the second in the 2002-03 speaker series sponsored by the university's Women Involved in Living and Learning (WILL) and Women's Studies programs. For more information, call 804-289-8578.
