"Beyond 9 to 5" Series at University of Richmond to Address Organizing Women Workers

Doris Crouse-Mays, Virginia state director of the AFL-CIO, will speak on the unionization of services and industries that predominantly employ women November 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the University of Richmond.

Mays' appearance is sponsored by the university's Women Involved in Living and Learning (WILL) and women's studies programs, which are examining women's role in the workplace and its impact on their lives during a five-part lecture series this year.

Mays will discuss how she focuses on gender disparities in pay, promotion and pension earnings after retirement, as well as child care, elder care and flexible hours to as key messages in union organizing efforts.

Lectures scheduled for the spring semester will cover affirmative action in women's lives, the history of affirmative action, and the impact of recent challenges to affirmative action on diversity on the American workforce. The series ends during Women's History Month with an exploration of women's writing, with emphasis on how themes of women, gender and work fit into writing.
