Pulitzer Prize Winner and Virginia History Expert Rhys Isaac to Speak at University of Richmond Nov. 15

November 5, 2004

University of Richmond will host a lecture by Pulitzer Prize winner Rhys Isaac entitled “Landon Carter’s Uneasy Kingdom” Nov. 15, 7:30 p.m., at Jepson Hall 118.

Isaac, professor of history at Latrobe University in Australia, won the Pulitzer for his 1984 book, “The Transformation of Virginia, 1740-1790.”

The lecture will draw from his latest title, “Landon Carter’s Uneasy Kingdom: Revolution and Rebellion on a Virginia Plantation,” published this year by Oxford University Press.

Son of Robert “King” Carter, Landon Carter hailed from one of America’s richest colonial families and supported the American Revolution. Like Thomas Jefferson, Carter was deeply conflicted by his commitment to liberty yet ownership of slaves. Through examination of Carter’s diaries, Isaac analyzed the slaveholder’s life on the Rappahannock River plantation and found ironically that the rebellion he supported ended his family’s way of life. The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, call (804) 289-8333.
