November 17, 2004

Belinda Anderson, president of Virginia Union University, a historically black university founded in Richmond in 1865, will speak at the University of Richmond Dec. 1 at 4 p.m. in the Brown-Alley Room of Weinstein Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

In her talk, “Continuing the Quest for Equal Access in Higher Education,” Anderson will discuss VUU’s history and current renaissance as well as her own career as an advocate for equal access to higher education.

Anderson was interim president of VUU prior to her appointment as president in May 2004, when she became the first woman to head the university. Prior to joining VUU, Anderson served in senior positions with the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), as dean of the School of General and Continuing Education at Norfolk State University and as director of academic advising at Radford University. She began her career as a classroom teacher in the Portsmouth and Norfolk, Va., public school systems.

Anderson’s appearance is part of the 2004–05 lecture series sponsored by Women Involved in Living and Learning and Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies. The Center for Civic Engagement is co-sponsoring the event. For more information, contact (804) 289-8840 or will@richmond.edu.
