University of Richmond Chaplain's Office Announces Seven In My Backyard Awards

November 13, 2003

The Chaplain's Office at the University of Richmond recently presented seven In My Backyard Awards totaling $10,000.

Service Associates, a task force coordinated by the university's chaplaincy program to identify, recognize and nurture organizations whose efforts "contribute to a vision of community for the city of Richmond," created the awards in 1997. Task force members represent sectors of the city's non-profit community.

This year's awards went to the ministry Boaz & Ruth Inc. to provide job training, retail revitalization and cross-cultural community-building in Highland Park; Daughters of Zelophehad, an ecumenical Christian housing program, to support women and children in crisis; Greater Oxford Civic Association-Oxford Senior Citizens' Emergency Fund, to provide home repairs, yard work and personal assistance for senior citizens; Highland Park Retail Merchants at Six Points to incorporate an organization to build a safe, beautiful and thriving commercial district in Highland Park; Living Word Stage Company to provide alternative educational and creative outlets through the performing arts for youth ages 12-18; Potter's Digital Wheel to repair and distribute donated computers and teach computer skills to those caught in the "digital divide" and Tricycle Garden to maintain an urban community garden in Richmond's East End.
