Historic Charleston Foundation Official to Kick Off University of Richmond Forum on Historic Preservation
November 18, 2003
Jonathan Poston, director of museums and preservation for Historic Charleston Foundation in Charleston, S.C., will be the first speaker in the University of Richmond's Urban Practice and Policy Forum Jan. 21, 2004.
Poston, who graduated from the University of Richmond and Richmond Law School, will speak on "Historic Preservation: Getting it Right. What Questions Should We Ask?" at 7:30 p.m. in room 118 of Jepson Hall. The program is free and open to the public.
Poston has guided the preservation efforts of Historic Charleston Foundation for many years. He is the author of "The Buildings of Charleston: A Guide to the City's Architecture." His lecture will focus on preservation in a living city, citing Charleston's unique approach to preservation since the 1920s and how it works today in a very political environment.
Other speakers in the series, sponsored by the Richmond Quest, will be John Hoogakker, associate vice president for facilities at the University of Richmond, and Allan Greenberg, president of Allan Greenberg Architects, discussing "Preserving and Extending the Historic Campus: Do We Know the Right Questions?" on Feb. 25; and Edwin Slipek, historic preservation and architectural critic for "Style Weekly," moderating a panel discussion on "Historic Preservation in 21st Century Richmond: What Questions Should We Be Asking?" on March 31. Both programs will be held at 7:30 p.m. in room 118 of Jepson Hall and are open to the public at no charge.
