Chaplain's Office at University of Richmond Announces Five In My Backyard Awards

November 15, 2002

The Chaplain's Office at the University of Richmond recently awarded five In My Backyard (IMBY) Awards totaling over $4,500.

The IMBY Awards were designed by the Service Associates, a task force coordinated by the university's chaplaincy program, to identify, recognize and nurture organizations whose efforts "contribute to a vision of community for the city of Richmond." Task force members represent sectors of the city's non-profit community.

This year's awards went to the Alliance to Conserve Old Richmond Neighborhoods, to promote purchase and renovation of vacant and abandoned buildings; the Blackwell Community Civic Assoc., to encourage community involvement and volunteerism; Communities in Schools of Richmond, to provide after-school activities for Swansboro Elementary School students; Khmer Society, to develop a computer program to prepare immigrants for the U.S. naturalization process; and the Richmond Peace Education center, to provide conflict resolution training for youth in the Fairfield Court community.

The IMBY Awards are made possible through the generosity of Marcus Weinstein.
