Debate Team Reaches National Tournament Finals for First Time

The University of Richmond Debate team reached the finals of the recent Washington, D.C., National Tournament for the first time. Richmond competed in the novice division.
The tournament, which was held Oct. 20-21, draws some of the brightest students from around the country.
Out of 50 teams, the Richmond team of Grant Christensen and Katie Albrecht earned a 5-1 record in the preliminary debates, then won three rounds before losing in the finals.
West Virginia, Mary Washington, Liberty, Towson and Trinity (Tex.) were among the schools Richmond defeated.
In addition, Christensen won the eighth-best speaker award out of more than 100 competitors. The team will compete in the National Novice Tournament Championship at Towson State University, March 1-3, 2002.
