Richmond City Council to Honor University's President for Community Service Day Project
November 26, 2001
Richmond's city council will honor William E. Cooper, president of the University of Richmond, at its regularly scheduled meeting tonight.
Mayor Rudolph C. McCollum Jr. and district 3 council representative W. Randolph Johnson Jr. will present the award, recognizing the work of more than 600 university students, alumni, faculty and staff to beautify grounds and buildings at John Marshall High School and T.H. Henderson Model Middle School on Sept. 22.
Cooper spearheaded the university's first Community Service Day and worked on a crew that helped install a fountain and fishpond in the Marshall courtyard. With supplies and meals donated by area businesses and university vendors, other volunteers cleaned, painted and landscaped. Some 125 Marshall and Henderson teachers and students also worked that day.
The award will be presented early in the meeting, following the invocation, Pledge of Allegiance and roll call. The proceedings will be telecast live over AT&T cable television's City Channel 37 (with at least five repeat telecasts during the following week).
