University of Richmond hosting Women in the Know conference June 6
May 13, 2008
Edward L. Ayers, president of the University of Richmond and a scholar of Southern history, will deliver the keynote address at the 7th annual Women in the Know conference at the university June 6.
The conference—a day of intellectual engagement and discovery—is open to area women and also includes mini-courses, lunch, a reception and discussion. The cost is $50, and the deadline for registering is May 23.
The mini-courses will cover women's spirituality with Kate O'Dwyer Randall, acting chaplain to the university, women and war with Tze M. Loo, assistant professor of history, and intergenerational dynamics and relationships with Lee Brazzell, CEO of Transformation Consulting.
Ayers assumed Richmond's presidency in July 2007. Named National Professor of the Year in 2003, he has written and edited 10 books. "The Promise of the New South: Life After Reconstruction" was a finalist for both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. "In the Presence of Mine Enemies: Civil War in the Heart of America" won the Bancroft Prize for distinguished writing in American history. Ayers also created "The Valley of the Shadow: Two Communities in the American Civil War," a Web site that has attracted millions of visitors.
O'Dwyer Randall holds a master's degree from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, where she previously taught ethics. She studied with the Dominican sisters for six years and has conducted research in early Christian mystics.
Loo teaches courses in East Asian history at Richmond that emphasize the interconnectedness of that region. She holds a master's degree and Ph.D. from Cornell University and a master's degree from National University of Singapore.
Brazzell has been an adjunct professor at the university's Management Institute, a division of the Robins School of Business that presents campus-based and on-site leadership, management and executive development training to organizations around the country. She has more than 25 years experience in organizational development, human resources, counseling, program design and development, strategic planning, leadership and project management.
