University of Richmond Trustees Vote to Pursue Possible Expansion of On-Campus Stadium to Accommodate Football
May 12, 2003
The University of Richmond Board of Trustees voted to pursue possible expansion of the existing multipurpose stadium on the Richmond campus to accommodate intercollegiate football during its meeting on May 9. Construction is contingent upon approval by the City of Richmond and raising an estimated $11 million dollars to fund the project. In addition, the university plans to solicit input from faculty, staff, students, alumni and campus neighbors before moving forward with the project.
The expanded multipurpose stadium will be added to the list of capital projects for which the university is currently raising funds, including the renovation and expansion of the Gottwald Science Center and expansions of Boatwright Memorial Library and the Robins School of Business.
Preliminary plans call for an expanded multipurpose stadium of 6-9,000 seats for use by the Richmond's soccer, track, lacrosse and football teams. First Market Stadium, the university's existing soccer and track facility, currently offers seating for 3,000 fans.
The university plans to continue playing home football games at the city-owned UR Stadium until funding for an on-campus stadium is completed.
