May 15, 2001
University of Richmond rising senior Jonathan W. Robbins has won a Goldwater Scholarship, the premier undergraduate award in math, natural science and physics.
Robbins, a physics and computer science major from Smithfield, was one of nine students from Virginia to win a Goldwater. He is the third Goldwater Scholar at Richmond in the past two years.
Nationwide, 302 students from all 50 states and Puerto Rico won a one- or two- year scholarship, which covers tuition, fees, books, room and board up to $7,500 per year. Winners were selected for academic merit from a field of 1,164 students nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide.
Robbins plans to earn a Ph.D. degree in computer graphics or artificial intelligence. Last summer, he completed an internship with NASA, where he worked on a computer vision project.
Erin E. Collins, a rising junior mathematics and physics major from Harrisburg, Pa., won an honorable mention in the competition.
Congress established the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program in 1986. Since then, it has awarded more than 3,000 scholarships worth about $33 million to college students pursuing careers in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering.
