University of Richmond chancellor, 82, to retrace cross-country motorcycle ride starting March 29 in San Diego; will meet alumni, Marines en route

March 10, 2009

Bruce Heilman, the 82-year-old chancellor of the University of Richmond, will start on his second cross-country motorcycle ride in six months March 29, when he departs San Diego for Harlingen, Texas.

Heilman, a World War II veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, plans to meet with Richmond alumni for breakfast each day while en route to the Marine Military Academy board meeting in Harlingen on April 3. He plans to generally follow Interstate highways 8 and 10 through El Paso and San Antonio.

He'll resume riding his Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide, Patriot Special Edition, motorcycle the rest of the way to Virginia on May 4 through Marshall, Texas, and Arkansas.

Heilman recently published a book, "An Interruption that Lasted a Lifetime," recounting how the G.I. Bill made possible the higher education career he never expected.
