Taiwanese chief representative to the United States, Joseph Wu, to speak at University of Richmond April 3 on Taiwan-U.S. partnership

March 25, 2008

Joseph Wu, Taiwan's chief governmental representative to the United States, will speak at the University of Richmond April 3 on "Taiwan and the United States: Partners in Security, Prosperity and Democracy."

Wu's talk will focus on Taiwan's key role in global high-tech commerce, Chinese culture, Sino-American relations and American policy in Asia. It takes place at Jepson Hall, Room 118, and begins at 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.

In the absence of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office functions as Taiwan's embassy in the United States. Wu fulfills the role of Taiwanese ambassador and is a member of his country's cabinet.

Wu assumed his post in April 2007 after serving as chairman of the Mainland Affairs Council, Taiwan's cabinet-level agency for relations with the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong and Macau. He has also been a senior aide to Taiwan's president, Chen Shui-bian, and a professor at National Chengchi University, an exchange partner of the University of Richmond.

Wu earned his doctorate in political science from The Ohio State University.

The talk is sponsored jointly by the University of Richmond's Department of Political Science and the World Affairs council of Greater Richmond. For more information, contact Vincent Wang at (804) 289-8533 or vwang@richmond.edu.
