University of Richmond Names Alumnus Thomas C. Gutenberger as Vice President for Advancement

The University of Richmond has named Thomas C. Gutenberger, a 1987 graduate of the university with 20 years of successful development and alumni relations experience in higher education, its next vice president for advancement.
Gutenberger will be responsible for managing Richmond's alumni relations, communications, community relations and development, as well as foundation, corporate, and government relations.
Gutenberger currently serves as vice president for college relations at Union College in Schenectady, NY. At Union, he is leading the college's current $200 million fundraising campaign, built an integrated external relations program and has been closely involved in the school's strategic planning process.

"Being a Richmond graduate, Tom possesses a deep understanding of and affinity for this university. This, combined with his broad experience, promises to make him exceptionally effective in his new role. We are pleased to welcome Tom back to Richmond."

Gutenberger has served as vice president of college relations at Union College since 1999 and is responsible for all aspects of individual fundraising, corporate and government relations, alumni affairs, foundation relations, records and data systems, campaign management, communications, marketing, public relations and media relations.
Prior to joining Union College, Gutenberger served as director of university development and campaign director at George Mason University where he oversaw all aspects of fundraising, including individual giving, corporate and foundation relations, campaign management and development communications. At George Mason, he was responsible for planning and implementing a $110 million fundraising campaign—the first comprehensive campaign in the university's history.
Gutenberger's previous advancement experience is extensive and includes serving as director of major gifts and director of development for the College of Education at San Diego State University. In addition, he held a number of progressively senior development positions at Cornell University.
In addition to his bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Richmond, he holds a master's degree in business administration from San Diego State University.
Tom and his wife, Linda, have four children. He will officially join Richmond on July 1.
