Joyce Carol Oates to read at University of Richmond

March 15, 2007

National Book Award-winner Joyce Carol Oates will read at University of Richmond March 26 as part of the Department of English/Creative Writing Program's Reading Series.

"A Reading by Joyce Carol Oates" will begin at 7 p.m. in the Robins Pavilion of Jepson Alumni Center. A book signing will follow. The event is free and open to the public.

Oates, widely regarded as the finest American woman writer of the last several decades, writes in several genres. In addition to numerous novels and short story collections, she has published several volumes of poetry, several books of plays, five books of literary criticism and the book-length essay "On Boxing."

Her most recent works include "Broke Heart Blues," "Gemini: An American Epic" and "My Heart Laid Bare."

Her vision of presumably ordinary families in America who experience common yet intense emotional relationships and frequently encounter violence has earned her much praise and a number of awards. In addition to the National Book Award for her novel "Them," Oates received the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in short fiction, a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Rosenthal Award from the American Academy-Institute of Arts and Letters. She is currently the Roger S. Berlind Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at Princeton University.
