Two University of Richmond Students Named 2006-07 Goldwater Scholars
March 17, 2006
Two University of Richmond juniors have been named winners in the 2006-07 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships competition.
Michael Pohl, a computer science and mathematics double major from Cross, S.C., and Sarah Remmert, a chemistry and biochemistry double major from Memphis, Tenn., were among only 323 scholars selected nationwide to receive Goldwater scholarships. The one- and two-year awards cover tuition, fees, books, room and board up to $7,500 a year.
Pohl, who attended Warwick High School in Newport News, Va., plans to study network security at a research institution, government or commercial research program. Remmert, who attended Prince of Wales Collegiate in St. John’s, Newfoundland, hopes to conduct graduate research at the interface between chemistry and physics, using the fundamental principles of physical chemistry to answer important scientific questions.
Goldwater scholarships honor the late Arizona senator by encouraging outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, natural sciences and engineering. The Goldwater Scholarship is the premier undergraduate award of its type in these fields.
