March 23, 2005

The University of Richmond will host a daylong community open house on Saturday, April 2, as part of its 175th anniversary celebration.

The open house, which is free and open to the public, will take place 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. on the university’s West End campus. Events will include guided walking and trolley tours of campus, children’s activities, lectures, concerts, exhibits, international films and a baseball doubleheader. Parking is plentiful, and volunteers will be available to help visitors.

“We look forward to hosting folks of all ages for an enjoyable time on campus as part of the university’s celebration of its 175th anniversary,” said President William E. Cooper. President Cooper will speak on “The University of Richmond and the Richmond Community,” at 11 a.m. in the Jepson Alumni Center as part of the day’s activities, followed by a panel discussion involving several community leaders.

Other highlights of the open house include a multi-media presentation on the history of the university by professor Dan Roberts, host of NPR’s “A Moment in Time;” a scavenger hunt, an exhibit exploring the history of leading businesses in the Richmond region, lectures by Richmond law professors on a variety of topical issues, a 5k run benefiting Habitat for Humanity and a youth soccer clinic.
