University of Richmond Chorus to Perform Concerts in France and Italy

March 4, 2004

The University of Richmond's select chamber choir, Schola Cantorum, will leave Friday, March 5, for a 10-day tour of France and Italy, during which they will perform concerts in four cities.

Accompanied by choir director Jeffrey S. Riehl, associate professor of music, the 32-member mixed chorus will sing at the Basilique St.-Martin in Aix-en-Provence, the Parish Church in San Remo, Basilica San Lorenzo in Florence and Chiesa Santa Maria in Rome.

They will also attend mass in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City and tour each of the cities they visit.

"The University of Richmond provides excellent opportunities for its students not only to live and study abroad in academic settings, but also for them to perform in the great venues of Europe," said Riehl. "In addition to performing concerts on its own, Schola will enjoy two joint performances with Italian choirs."

Members of Schola Cantorum study and perform choral literature from a variety of style periods and origins with an emphasis on a cappella repertoire.
