University of Richmond's Walter Green is Named Fellow of British Civil Defense and Disaster Organization

March 29, 2004

Walter G. Green III, program director of the Emergency Services Management degree program in the University of Richmond's School of Continuing Studies, has been named a fellow of the Institute for Civil Defense and Disaster Studies.

The institute, located in the United Kingdom, is the oldest emergency management professional organization in the world. It was established in 1938 to raise public awareness to the threat of air attack in the event of war and to train civilians to implement or participate in emergency response procedures. It remains committed to public preparedness through training and educational research.

Green also is a fellow of the American College of Contingency Planners (ACCP) and the American Academy of Medical Administrators (AAMA). The two designations are considered professionally the equivalent of medical specialty board certification. He is serving as ACCP's president-elect this year and will serve as president in 2005-06.

When Green, who also is associate professor of emergency management at Richmond, began the ESM program at Richmond six years ago, it was one of only four in the nation. Now more than 100 colleges and universities offer emergency management courses. Green is a former director of emergency operations for the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services. He also is a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel and author of several books and articles on emergency medical services.
