ACLU President Nadine Strossen to Speak at University of Richmond

March 27, 2003

Nadine Strossen, president of the American Civil Liberties Union, will speak on "Challenges to Civil Liberties in a Post-9-11 World" at 7 p.m. April 3 at the University of Richmond's Jepson Alumni Center. The talk is free and open to the public.

Strossen will discuss the challenge of balancing civil rights with broadening surveillance for national security following the attacks on the World Trade Center. Her talk is sponsored by the Young Democrats.

"It seemed to us that there were alarming changes happening to the status of our civil liberties," said Julie Laskaris, faculty adviser to the club, "and that she would be an excellent person to have as a speaker."

Strossen is a law professor at New York Law School. In her practice, writings and speeches, she has focused primarily on constitutional law, civil liberties and international human rights. She has published approximately 250 books and articles, including "Defending Pornography: Free Speech, Sex and the Fight for Women's Rights" and "Speaking of Race, Speaking of Sex: Hate Speech, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties."
