Janine Bell to Speak at University of Richmond
March 4, 2003
Janine Bell, founder and artistic director of the Elegba Folklore Society, will discuss women's roles in the transmission of West African music, dance and oral tradition in the Americas in an appearance at the University of Richmond March 27.
Beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Alice Haynes Room of Tyler Haynes Commons, the program will include a performance by the society's dancers and drummers. It is free and open to the public.
Elegba Folklore Society is a Richmond organization devoted to community education about African and African-American culture and history. It sponsors classes, concerts, art exhibits and cultural history tours and participates in community events. The society's name comes from that of a Yoruba spirit who "opens the roads, bringing clarity out of confusion," which Bell describes as the society's mission.
Bell's appearance is the fourth event in the 2002-03 speaker series sponsored by Women Involved in Living and Learning (WILL) and the Women's Studies programs. For more information, call (804) 289-8578.
