LATIN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL SEEKS TRUTH THROUGH FILMMAKING

March 13, 2001

The University of Richmond Spanish program will host "2001-Truth in the Lens: International Symposium/Festival on Latin American Film" March 22-24.

The festival will consist of opening and closing keynote addresses, screenings of six Latin American movies, post-film discussions with most of the directors and a roundtable featuring filmmakers and critics. All events are free and open to the public.

Films will be shown with English subtitles, and interpreters will translate the post-film comments. The keynote addresses will be in English, but the roundtable discussion will be conducted in Spanish without translation.

Recent works by directors Cristian Galaz, Camilo Luzuriaga, Bruno Stagnaro, Adrián Caetano, Mela Márquez, Luis Figueroa and Sergio Cabrera are scheduled.

David William Foster, chairman of languages and literatures at Arizona State University, and Michael Chanan, a British documentary director who focuses on Latin American subjects, will deliver the keynote addresses. Foster specializes in Argentinean literature and film and has written widely on Spanish-language cinema, culture and society.

The roundtable will focus on achievements and shortcomings of Latin American cinema today. Panelists will include directors of the scheduled films, plus Chanan and Foster.

A schedule of events follows. For additional information, contact Claudia Ferman at 804-289-8114 or cferman@richmond.edu, or access the Web site at www.richmond.edu/~lang/2001_film.
