New international program at University of Richmond examines origins of democracy and foundations of leadership

June 25, 2009

The Jepson School of Leadership Studies has partnered with the American Community Schools in Athens, Greece to create a summer student program focused on leadership, civic responsibility and community service.

The Jepson-Athens Leadership Academy will include courses and activities in Athens, Richmond, Va., and Washington, D.C.

The Greek students will visit the U.S. June 27 through July 12 to tour Monticello, the Virginia and U.S. Capitols and celebrate Independence Day in Washington, D.C. At Richmond, J. Thomas Wren, professor of leadership studies, will teach the students a week-long leadership studies course incorporating Greek philosophers and using his textbook, "The Leader's Companion."

"One of our strategic priorities is to develop robust international learning experiences for our students," said Jepson Dean Sandra J. Peart. "This program represents a new international venue for Jepson that opens up exciting possibilities for our students and faculty members. Our hope is that we will expand our academic relationships over time."

The program started in mid-June with Jepson senior Danielle Mosher helping to teach a course on ethical decision-making and leadership as part of her internship at the American Community Schools. The course included simulations, role-playing and team building exercises.
