The University of Richmond has named Roberta Oster Sachs, a former award-winning network news producer and journalism professor, as interim assistant vice president for university communications.
Oster Sachs has served as associate dean for external relations at the university's School of Law for the past two years, where she was responsible for media and public relations, publications and marketing. She has also taught in the Jepson School of Leadership Studies.
"Roberta combines outstanding national media experience with knowledge of academic administration and the strengths of the University of Richmond. We are thrilled to have her talent and energy to lead our communications team," said Richmond President Edward L. Ayers.
Before joining Richmond, Oster Sachs taught journalism at Tufts University, where she founded and directed the Media and Public Service Program. She has also served in visiting appointments at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and at Princeton University. She was awarded a John S. Knight Fellowship for Professional Journalists to study at Stanford University for the 1997-98 academic year.
Prior to working in higher education, Oster Sachs was a producer at "Dateline NBC." She also worked for two decades at the New York headquarters of NBC, ABC and CBS network news departments, where she covered public policy and education issues and won national recognition, including an Emmy Award, a Cine Golden Eagle and first place for news magazine reporting from the National Association of Black Journalists.
Oster Sachs has a master's degree from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and an undergraduate degree from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service. Her new appointment is effective June 9.
