Chemistry professor recognized for summer research and teaching program that encourages student interest in science

June 19, 2008

Lisa Gentile, associate professor of biophysical chemistry at the University of Richmond, is one of two young professors recognized by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology for teaching and research.

An article, "Faculty Who Make a Difference, Part I," in the society's magazine discusses Gentile's work with undergraduate researchers, high school science teachers and their students during summers. The undergrads conduct experiments, and Gentile makes recreation, such as hiking and whitewater rafting, part of the research.

Gentile earned a Ph.D. from Brown University and has published two dozen articles on biochemistry and chemistry. She is a project director for advanced student research projects sponsored by the Merck Institute for Science Education and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and a member of the committee implementing the university's $1.4 million Howard Hughes Medical Institute grant.
