University of Richmond computer science professor awarded National Science Foundation grant

June 5, 2007

Kelly Shaw, assistant professor of computer science at University of Richmond, has been awarded a grant by the National Science Foundation to research methods for increasing the efficiency of computer chip multiprocessors.

The $135,000 grant will fund three years of research, covering expenses such as student researchers.

Shaw will explore techniques to streamline resource demands on multiprocessors when applications are used to retrieve massive amounts of data. The goal is to make data retrieval faster and more efficient.

"There are businesses, scientists and agencies collecting massive amounts of data to analyze new patterns and ideas, and this research will put us in the direction of figuring out a way to process that data for efficient use," Shaw said.
