First Luce Scholarship recipient selected at University of Richmond
June 11, 2007
Jill Petroski, a rising junior from Farmington, Conn., is the first of three recipients of a Clare Booth Luce Scholarship at University of Richmond.
The Luce Foundation gave the university a grant to provide full tuition, room and board for the selected student's junior and senior years. One student will be selected each year for three years. Recipients must be female students majoring in mathematics, computer science or physics.
Petroski is double majoring in mathematics and accounting. She is a Quantitative Science Center Fellow, exploring issues at the interface of mathematics and the natural sciences. She is participating in the mathematics department's summer LURE program to investigate questions of the history of American mathematics from 1900-1940.
The Clare Booth Luce program promotes the advancement of American women through higher education in the sciences, engineering and mathematics. It is the most significant source of private support for women in these fields. Luce was a playwright, journalist, U.S. Ambassador to Italy and the first woman elected to Congress from Connecticut.
