June 8, 2006

Four University of Richmond students have received scholarships from the Institute for International Education to study abroad this summer in China and Japan.

Studying in Japan through July 3 under IIE’s Freeman-ASIA scholarship are Randy Begel, a rising junior from Richmond, Va.; Danielle Pierre, a rising junior from Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Lori Smith, a rising sophomore from Chester, Va.

Studying in China June 23–Aug. 5 under IIE’s National Security Education Program scholarship is Thomas Gibney, a rising junior from Nashville, Tenn.

Students in Japan will study the Japanese language while based in Hamamatsu. They will live with host families. In China, Gibney will take language courses at Beijing University and visit such notable cultural sites as the Great Wall, Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven.

The Freeman-ASIA awards are designed to give American undergraduates opportunities to study in East and Southeast Asia. Recipients are expected to share their experiences with their home campuses to encourage study abroad in Asia by others and to spread a greater understanding of Asian peoples and cultures within their home communities.

The NSEP scholarship provides funding for American students to study in world regions critical to security interests of the United States. Recipients are expected to seek work with the federal government.
