Leadership Education Conference Planned at University of Richmond

June 9, 2003

Making the case for leadership education is the focus of a conference July 17-20 at the University of Richmond. Attending will be student affairs administrators and others involved with developing leadership studies among college students. The National Association for Campus Activities and the National Clearinghouse for Leadership Programs are the sponsors.

"The symposium is a scholarly program designed to promote greater understanding of critical issues and evolving models centered on college leadership programs," said Max V. Vest, Richmond's director of student activities and an organizer of the conference.

Participants will read four books prior to the conference, including "Exploring Leadership: For College Students Who Want to Make a Difference" by Susan Komives, Nance Lucas and Timothy McMahon and "The Deep Blue Sea: Rethinking the Source of Leadership," by Wilfred Drath.

The conference will host four scholars-in-residence: Jan Arminio, assistant professor at Shippensburg University; Wilfred Drath, senior Fellow of the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, N.C.; Susan Komives, associate professor at the University of Maryland-College Park; and Kathleen Zimmerman-Oster, assistant professor at the University of Detroit-Mercy and president and director of evaluation services for TEST Inc.

Organizers hope to develop strategies for advancing leadership education and to affirm the role of higher education in preparing students to be leaders where they will live and work. For more information, call NACA at (803)732-6222.
