Shanghai Quartet to Remain at the University of Richmond as Distinguished Visiting Artists

June 4, 2003

After 13 years in residence with the department of music at the University of Richmond, the Shanghai Quartet will establish a new relationship with the university's Modlin Center for the Arts.

Beginning July 1, 2003 the Shanghai Quartet will become the Modlin Center's first Distinguished Visiting Artists. As Distinguished Visiting Artists, the quartet will perform concerts during the regular Great Performances season (Sept-May) and continue serving as artistic directors and performers for the annual Modlin Summer Nights arts series (June). In addition to their frequent concerts in Richmond, the quartet will provide a series of residency activities for University of Richmond students, faculty and staff as well as for string students in the Richmond community.

To celebrate this new relationship and the quartet's 20th anniversary, the Modlin Center and the Shanghai Quartet, with support from the Robins Foundation, will present the entire cycle of Beethoven String Quartets in a series of six free concerts beginning in September 2003. This series of concerts marks the first time that the entire Beethoven quartet cycle has been presented in Richmond. Modlin Center Great Performances subscribers will be given priority in reserving tickets to these free concerts and the remaining tickets will become available to the public approximately one month in advance of each program.
