University of Richmond Signs Agreements with Two Community Colleges
July 28, 2006
The University of Richmond has signed agreements with John Tyler Community College and J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College to allow students who meet certain criteria to seamlessly transition into a bachelor’s degree completion program at University of Richmond School of Continuing Studies (SCS). The articulation agreements were signed on July 20 by Richmond Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs June R. Aprille, J. Sargeant Reynolds President Gary L. Rhodes and John Tyler President Marshall W. Smith.
Under the agreement, SCS will guarantee acceptance to any John Tyler or J. Sargeant Reynolds student who has completed an associate of applied arts, associate of arts and sciences or associate of applied science degree with a minimum grade point average of 2.0. Students from either John Tyler or J. Sargeant Reynolds also will have the option of applying to SCS immediately after they begin their educations at either community college so that they may begin planning for their eventual transfers.
The agreement allows credits from either community college to transfer to SCS’ emergency services management, human resource management, information systems or IT management, liberal arts (including preparation for the teacher licensure certificate and the Weekend College Program), or paralegal studies bachelor’s degree programs.
“For many years, we have enjoyed very positive relationships with both John Tyler and J. Sargeant Reynolds community colleges,” said James L. Narduzzi, dean of SCS. “The purpose of these agreements is to make the transition for students from each community college to SCS as seemless as possible, thereby providing the community with yet another path to an undergraduate degree.”
“John Tyler Community College has a longstanding positive relationship with the division of continuing studies at the University of Richmond,” said Smith. “This formal agreement solidifies and expands that relationship in a number of important academic areas. Our students have been warmly received and, in turn, have gained an outstanding education. This new arrangement will foster more success in educating people in the greater Richmond area, and I am very pleased that John Tyler is a part of it.”
"We are very proud to join John Tyler Community College and the University of Richmond School of Continuing Studies in a partnership that will continue to serve the lifelong learning needs of individuals and organizations throughout the Greater-Richmond area," said Rhodes.
John Tyler is the sixth largest of the 23 community colleges in Virginia. With campuses in Chester and Midlothian and off-campus classrooms throughout the area, John Tyler serves more than 8,500 students each year, primarily from Amelia, Charles City, Chesterfield, Colonial Heights, Dinwiddie, Hopewell, Petersburg, Prince George, Surry and Sussex.
Serving more than 17,000 students annually, J. Sargeant Reynolds is the youngest and third largest of the state’s community colleges. The college consists of three campuses to serve residents of Richmond and the counties of Henrico, Hanover, Goochland, Powhatan and Louisa.
