Black History Month at University of Richmond focuses on the transformation of black leadership

University of Richmond will celebrate Black History Month with several events in February examining the transformation of black leadership. All programs are open to the public, and some require a ticket or admission fee as noted.

The Holy Rosary Catholic Church Choir, UR Jazz Ensemble and other guests will join university student groups in music and dance performances Feb. 4 at 4 p.m. in Heilman Dining Center. University President Edward L. Ayers will address guests, and dinner will be prepared by Bull and Bear Club executive chef Michael Hall. Admission is $8.50, the standard dining hall dinner charge. Other Black History Month events include:

  • "Making the Difference: Emerging as a Leader," Feb. 15, 2-4 p.m., Keller Hall Reception Room. Participants will discuss the evolving definition of leadership. For more information, contact Tina Cade, tcade@richmond.edu or 804-289-8032.
  • "The Making of a Champion: A Journey of Leadership at UR & Beyond," Feb. 17, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Tyler Haynes Commons, Alice Haynes Room. A panel of African-American university alumni will discuss their journey to leadership positions, including their college experiences.   • "Conversations on Race, Reconciliation and Richmond," Feb. 26, 4 p.m., Jepson Alumni Center. Inspired by the legacy of Abraham Lincoln, the program will examine race and social justice from emancipation to institutionalized injustice today. Tickets are required. Additional events, including a new poster exhibit at The Library of Virginia, a black history knowledge activity for members of Boys & Girls Club of Metro Richmond, an exhibit at Boatwright Memorial Library and a brown bag lunch discussion on civil rights also will be held.
