The Modlin Center presents: Soweto Gospel Choir

January 26, 2007

Since its emergence in 2002 as an exciting musical talent, Soweto Gospel Choir has achieved major success both overseas and in South Africa. The choir has been touring internationally for three years now, to critical acclaim and sold out concerts. Soweto returns to the Modlin Center on Monday, February 19 at 7:30 for a single performance in the Camp Concert Hall.

Since Soweto Gospel Choir's introduction to American audiences three years ago, the instantly inviting, heart-warming and awe-inspiring choir has amassed a growing international fan-base, performed to sold out audiences throughout the world, sung alongside such icons as Bono, Peter Gabriel, Diana Ross and Jimmy Cliff, and has been heralded as the most exciting group to emerge in world music in years. 2006 was a banner year for Soweto Gospel Choir, who has made fans of Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu (the choir's patron).

The Soweto Gospel Choir was formed to celebrate the unique and inspirational power of African Gospel music. The 26-strong choir, under the direction of David Mulovhedzi and Beverly Bryer, draws on the best talent from the many churches in and around Soweto. The choir is dedicated to sharing the joy of faith through music with audiences around the world.

"Hearing the full choir harmonize sounded less like a couple dozen people singing together and more like a pipe organ roaring to life," writes the Atlanta Journal. USA Today says, "these luxuriantly full-voiced singers combine joyful, spiritual vision with a global perspective...fresh and vibrant."
