January 16, 2006
Nancy Tuana, professor of philosophy at the University of Oregon, will discuss the science of women’s health and sexuality through the lens of the women’s health movement in the United States in a talk at the University of Richmond Feb. 9.
The third in a series sponsored by the Women Involved in Living and Learning and the Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies programs, Tuana’s talk will begin at 4 p.m. in the Brown-Alley Room of Weinstein Hall. The lecture, titled “The Speculum of Science: Knowledge and Ignorance in the Field of Women’s Bodies,” is open to the public at no charge.
Tuana is author or editor of eight books or anthologies and is working on a ninth: “Philosophy of Science Studies,” which will investigate methodological and conceptual changes in the philosophy of science from the 1950’s to the present.
Her teaching focuses on science studies, feminist philosophy and epistemology, the branch of philosophy that studies knowledge.
The WILL/WGSS Speaker Series is focusing this year on “Whose Science? Whose Knowledge? Science, Power and Social Identity.” For more information, call (804) 289-8578.
