Appalachian Women's Alliance Returns to University of Richmond With Program on Grassroots Organizing
January 20, 2005
Members of the Appalachian Women’s Alliance, a network of women and girls from across the Appalachian region, will present a program of poetry, music and talk called “Grassroots Organizing among Appalachian Women” Feb. 21 at the University of Richmond.
The 7 p.m. event will be held in Perkinson Recital Hall, North Court. The event is free and open to the public and is part of the Women Involved in Living and Learning (WILL) and the Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) Speaker Series. The 2004-05 series’ theme is “Interrogating Limits, Pushing Boundaries: Artists/Academics/Activists.” This is the second year the alliance has appeared in the series.
The alliance brings together black, white and Native American women of diverse age, income and sexual identity to work on issues of economic justice, racism, heterosexism and violence against women in Appalachian communities. The alliance celebrates Appalachian women’s diverse cultures and supports grassroots organizing through a journal, an annual festival and traveling caravans that reach out to women in isolated areas.
