The National Cancer Institute Awards $190,000 Grant to University of Richmond Chemistry Professor

January 20, 2005

John Gupton III, a University of Richmond chemistry professor, has received an award of $190,980 from The National Institutes of Health’s National Cancer Institute for research on treatment of various forms of cancer.

Since the beginning of his project in 2001, Gupton has received more than $2 million in grant support for his research on developing organic compounds that show significant promise in treating cancer. This latest grant is a continuation of his NIH Academic Research Enhancement Award and will fund his research until the end of 2007, including the summer salary, supplies and travel for Gupton and several undergraduate students. The title of the project is “A Combination Strategy for Pyrrole Containing Alkaloids.”

Gupton holds a B.S. in chemistry from the Virginia Military Institute and M.S. and Ph.D. in chemistry from the Georgia Institute of Technology. For 26 years, his research group has involved undergraduate students, appearing as co-authors on the majority of his 86 refereed publications.
