Appalachian Women's Alliance to Present Program on Cultural Organizing at University of Richmond

January 21, 2004

Members of the Appalachian Women's Alliance, a grassroots network of women and girls from across the Appalachian region, will present a program of poetry, music and talk called "Cultural Organizing Among Appalachian Women" Feb. 10 at the University of Richmond.

This is the fourth event in the 2003-04 WILL/Women's Studies Speaker Series and will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Perkinson Recital Hall, North Court. The series' theme is "Ethics in a Changing World." The event is free and open to the public.

The Appalachian Women's Alliance brings together black, white and Native American women of diverse age, income and sexual identity to work on issues of economic justice, racism, heterosexism and violence against women in Appalachian communities. The alliance celebrates Appalachian women's diverse cultures and supports grassroots organizing through a journal, an annual festival and traveling caravans that reach out to women in isolated areas.

Women Involved in Living and Learning (WILL) and the Women's Studies program are co-sponsors of the event. For more information, call (804) 289-8578.
