Jan. 9, 2001

Student and faculty anti-sweatshop organizers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will speak at the University of Richmond on Jan. 23.

They will speak about organizing college students in protest of sweatshops worldwide at 4 p.m. in Keller Hall Reception Room. The title of their presentation, which is free to the public, is "Confronting Globalization, One University at a Time: The Student Anti-Sweatshop Movement."

The organizers also will conduct a workshop for interested students.

The event is sponsored by the Women Involved in Living and Learning (WILL) program and the Women's Studies program at Richmond as part of a speaker series called "Building a Better World: Women and Men Organizing for Social Justice." The series is presented in honor of the 20th anniversary of WILL and Women's Studies at Richmond.

Speakers will include Todd Pugatch, a senior economics and Spanish major at UNC and a contributor to the book "Behind the Swoosh: The Struggle of Indonesians Making Nike Shoes"; and Altha Cravey, associate professor of geography at UNC and author of the book "Women and Work in Mexico's Maquiladoras."
