Domestic violence issues discussed at WILL/Quest forum Feb. 21-29

"Problem and Policy/Activism and Advocacy: Discussions on Domestic Violence," five presentations addressing the issues and prevention of abuse and violence against women, will be held Feb. 21-29 at the University of Richmond.

Diane Rosenfeld, Harvard University law professor and former senior counsel in the Department of Justice's Office on Violence Against Women, will open the series with "Crime, Punishment and Legal Issues: Restoring Liberty and Equality to Battered Women" Feb. 21 at 4 p.m. at Whitehurst Living Room. As senior counsel, she helped implement the Violence Against Women Act, devising programs within the Justice Department and other federal and state agencies. Other speakers will include:

  • Lisa Furr, project coordinator, Central Virginia Task Force on Older Battered Women, "Close to Home: How to Be an Advocate for Self and Others," Feb. 26, 4 p.m., Weinstein Hall, Brown-Alley Room.
  • Michael Kaufman, founder of the White Ribbon Campaign, an international movement of men working to end violence against women, "From Out in the World to Our Hometown: Working Together to End Violence," Feb. 28, 7:30 p.m., Tyler Haynes Commons, Alice Haynes Room.
  • Kelly Zen-Yie Tsai, Chinese-Taiwanese-American spoken-word artist and activist, "Politics and Poetics with Kelly Zen-Yie Tsai," Feb. 29, lunch discussion, 12:30 p.m., Think Tank in the Tyler Haynes Commons; performance, 9 p.m., the Pier, Tyler Haynes Commons.

The presentations are part of this year's jointly sponsored Jepson School of Leadership Studies/Women Involved in Living and Learning speaker series, Rhetoric & Reality: Race & Gender/Power & Politics, and also is sponsored by The Richmond Quest.
