Treating juvenile defendants as adults: A discussion with legal experts

February 8, 2008

The Journal of Law and Public Interest at the University of Richmond School of Law will host its annual symposium Feb. 26 from 6-8 p.m. in the law school's Moot Court Room. The symposium will examine the controversial laws that govern the transfer of juveniles into the adult criminal court system.

Elizabeth Murtagh, an attorney in the Charlottesville public defender's office, and Duncan Minton, Chesterfield County commonwealth's attorney, will discuss the problems of balancing the interests of juveniles with public safety. The discussion will be followed by audience questions. John Douglass, acting dean of the law school, will serve as moderator.

Tracey Evans, symposium chair, said "I am pleased that we will hear from experts on both sides of this controversial issue that is highly charged and affects our entire community."

The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.
