National Academy of Social Insurance inducts University of Richmond professor

February 26, 2008

The National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI) has announced University of Richmond political science professor Jennifer L. Erkulwater as one of its new members.

NASI accepted 41 candidates from a variety of backgrounds who best display knowledge in the fields of Social Security, Medicare, workers' compensation, unemployment insurance, social assistance and employee benefits. Members of NASI are recognized as experts in the field and frequently work on study panels, committees and projects for the academy.

Erkulwater is author of the book "Disability Rights and the American Social Safety Net." She began teaching at Richmond in 2001.

"NASI is a wonderful policy organization—one that promotes better public understanding and better policy in the truest sense of the word," Erkulwater said. "I greatly enjoy learning, talking and writing about social welfare issues, and the recognition is simply icing on the cake for doing what I like to do."

Prospective members must be nominated by current members and interviewed by the membership committee. NASI is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization with more than 800 members.
