The Modlin Center presents eighth blackbird: "strange imaginary animals part II"

February 8, 2007

Join the Modlin Center in welcoming the University of Richmond ensemble-in-residence, eighth blackbird, taking the stage Wednesday, February 21 at 7:30 pm in the Camp Concert Hall.

Known for its astounding musical versatility as well as for its dedication to the works of today's composers, eighth blackbird is one of the world's premier new music groups. The six talented musicians in this groundbreaking ensemble play flute, clarinet, violin, piano, cello and percussion, taking contemporary music to new heights.

A New York Times reviewer raved, "eighth blackbird's performances are the picture of polish and precision, and they seem to be thoroughly engaged...by music in a broad range of contemporary styles." The Boston Globe praises, "eighth blackbird wears its virtuosity lightly. Everything about this enterprising new-music ensemble bespeaks lightness and dynamism."

The latest recording by eighth blackbird is strange imaginary animals, released January 1, 2007, on Cedille Records. The release of this disc ties into their Richmond concerts this season, titled "strange imaginary animals part I & II." The upcoming concert will feature selections such as 13 ways of Looking at a Blackbird by Lukas Foss, a stanza of which contains the origin of the ensemble's name, Roberto Sierra's Cancionero Sefardi and Franco Donatoni's Arpege, among others.

Tickets are $30 for adults, $28 for seniors, $15 for children, $22 for UR faculty/staff and free for UR students. Tickets are on sale now by visiting or calling the Modlin Center Box Office at (804) 289-8980 or by visiting modlin.richmond.edu.
