The Modlin Center presents Noche Flamenca, featuring Soledad Barrio
February 22, 2007
One of Spain's most successful flamenco companies, Noche Flamenca's vitality, energy and passion have won accolades and standing ovations around the world. This stunning display of music and dance storms the Modlin Center for performances on Tuesday, March 20 and Wednesday, March 21, both at 7:30 pm in the Alice Jepson Theatre.
Noche Flamenca was founded in Madrid in 1993 by artistic director MartÃn Santangelo and his wife Soledad Barrio. Their goal since its inception has been to maintain the essence, purity and integrity of one of the world's most complex and mysterious art forms without the use of tricks or gimmicks.
The company relies on the high standards of its artists as well as their profound understanding of flamenco. All aspects of flamenco--dance, song and music--are interrelated and given equal weight in Noche Flamenca, creating a true communal spirit within the company, which is the very heart and soul of flamenco.
The New York Times says, "Soledad Barrio danced as if possessed by the spirit of a Gypsy encampment...she breathed the essence of flamenco."
The Village Voice echoes the fascination with and awe of lead dancer Barrio, saying, "She can access the deepest, most primal feelings and project them directly to her audience. Impelled by will and imagination, she turns herself into an engine of arousal and destruction."
Experience the fire and passion of this moving and profound art form. The noble, elegant mysteries of flamenco dance, song and music are interrelated and become a thrilling ride for audiences of all ages. Tickets are on sale now and available by visiting or calling the Modlin Center Box Office at (804) 289-8980 or by visiting modlin.richmond.edu.
