The Modlin Center presents The Bad Plus

February 22, 2007

Arguably one of the biggest breakout stories of jazz in the past decade, The Bad Plus combines talent and ingenuity to create a sound that moves and grows in fantastic new directions, testing limits of what an acoustic bass-piano-drums trio can do. The Bad Plus visits the Modlin Center on Monday, March 19, 2007 at 7:30 pm in Camp Concert Hall.

The Bad Plus exploded onto the music scene, recording their debut self-titled album after performing together only three times. After signing with Columbia Records in 2002, the group's major label debut, These Are the Vistas, was released in February 2003 with glowing reviews from traditional jazz outlets and more. The latest album, Suspicious Activity, features 10 musical incidents of suspicious activity, including nine originals. Pianist Ethan Iverson observes, "Our concept is far removed from the traditional roles of our instrumentation. The idea of 'piano-in-front-with-two-gentle-accompanists' is so completely foreign to what we do that it's simply...gone."

Rolling Stone magazine says, "By any standard, jazz or otherwise, it is moving, mighty music...bad to the bone, hot players with hard-rock hearts." The New York Times claims that The Bad Plus is, "Better than anyone at mixing the sensibilities of post-60's jazz and indie rock...."

Don't miss this unique and tantalizing expression of the fusion between jazz and rock-and-roll. Tickets are on sale now by visiting or calling the Modlin Center Box Office at (804) 289-8980 or by visiting modlin.richmond.edu.
