President of Baptist General Convention of Virginia Will Deliver 175th Anniversary Sermon

The Rev. Dr. Patricia Gould-Champ will preach the Founders Week sermon at Cannon Memorial Chapel at the University of Richmond on Feb. 27. The university is celebrating its 175th anniversary and the 75th anniversary of Cannon Memorial Chapel.

Gould-Champ is pastor and founder of Faith Community Baptist Church in Richmond and assistant professor of practical theology and director of field education at the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University. She made history in 2003 by becoming the first woman elected president of the Baptist General Convention of Virginia.

Gould-Champ’s sermon is part of the University’s ecumenical Christian worship service, which begins at 3:16 p.m. The University of Richmond Choir, directed by Jeffrey Riehl, will provide special music.

Gould-Champ has a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master of divinity degree with summa cum laude honors from Virginia Union University, a master of education degree from Virginia State University and a doctorate in educational administration from Virginia Tech.

She has served as both an elementary school teacher and as the youngest elementary school principal in Goochland. She also was associate director of the Division of Compensatory Education, ECIA, Chapter I with the Virginia Department of Education.
