University of Richmond and Germanna Community College to Sign Weekend College Agreement
February 24, 2004
The University of Richmond and Germanna Community College will formalize an agreement this week allowing Germanna graduates to complete bachelor's degrees in a "weekend college" program offered by Richmond's School of Continuing Studies.
Germanna graduates who have an associate in arts and sciences degree and at least 60 credit hours will be accepted into the program.
"Students should be able to complete their baccalaureate degree in a program of concentrated study of approximately 2 ½ years," explained Ned K. Swartz, SCS assistant dean.
Students will attend classes at Germanna's Fredericksburg campus on Friday evenings and Saturdays and study online one evening per week. The program's interdisciplinary major is composed of 10 courses that explore citizenship, human expression, business literacy, science and technology, and leadership and ethics, among other topics. The program also includes a "great works" reading requirement and a capstone senior seminar.
The goal of the weekend college is "to prepare students to see the universe as an integrated whole, expand their intellectual and practical horizons and produce effective citizens," said Swartz.
A formal, articulation agreement signing ceremony will take place Feb. 26 at 1 p.m. at Germanna's Fredericksburg campus. Germanna's president, Frank S. Turnage, and vice president for academic services, John D. Presley, will be present, along with June Aprille, provost of the University of Richmond, and James L. Narduzzi, dean of the School of Continuing Studies.
